On April 20th, 1889, in Branau am Inn, Austria, Adolf
Hitler was born. As a child Hitler constantly fought with his father and became
detached and introverted. Hitler wished to study fine arts but his father did
not approve, he wanted his son to pursue in business. Other than the art, Hitler
showed an interest in German nationalism. This interest would become the
motivating force of his life (2)
When Adolf’s father died in 1903, his mother allowed him to leave
school. Hitler moved to Vienna and applied to the Academy of Fine Arts two times
and was rejected both times. When the outbreak of World War I happened Hitler
applied to serve for the German army, and was accepted. After the war he
returned to Munich and continued to work for the military as an officer. His
speeches began to attract an audience. Hitler slowly rose to power over Germany,
and began enacting his policies and his views (2).
Hitler became known for his Nazi Party in Germany, and conducted the Holocaust. Hitler was responsible for the
deaths of 11 million people to 14 million people, including 6 million Jews.Hitler successfully exterminated Poles, communists, homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and trade unionists, among others (2). One of the camps during the Holocaust was Dachau, one of the first Nazi concentration camps that opened in Germany. This camp was intended to hold political prisoners and consisted of enforced labor. It is located on the grounds of an abandoned munitions factory near the medieval town of Dachau, about 16 km (9.9 mi) northwest of Munich in the state of Bavaria, in southern Germany (6). Another camp was Sachsenhausen, which was near Berlin. This camp was also a forced labor camp, and prisoners were severely punished for wrong actions. This camp is now a public museum (7). Buchenwald was another camp near Weimar, very famous during the Holocaust for its forced labor to women only. This camp contained mainly homosexuals and women with birth defects. Forced labor was held here and was responsible for the 33,462 documented deaths (8). The most famous camp during the Holocaust was Auschwitz. This was the over all name, but it was separated into three different camps. Auschwitz was known for its brutal extermination camp, and also for the forced labor that was held there. This camp was know as the "Gate to Hell" (9). The Holocaust prisoners lived in constant fear of brutal treatment and terror detention including standing cells, floggings, the so-called tree or pole hangings, and standing at attention for extremely long periods (6). The ghettos during the holocaust consisted of Jews being tightly compacted together, with little room to move or do anything (8). In these ghettos they were starved and given no showering time (8). Also at these camps certain pr0cedures were performed on the Jews. Some of the Jews were beaten to death with barb wired posts, and some were starved until their death (6). Gas chambers were very popular during the Holocaust as well, the generals would trick the Jews into thinking they were going to take a shower and they would be gassed to their death.
By early 1995, Hitler realized that Germany was going to lose the
war and realized the amount of trouble he was going to be in for the actions he had conducted. German army was driven back by the Soviets, and Allies were advancing into Germany. Hitler soon after married his girlfriend, Eva Bruan, and together the
two committed suicide the day after their wedding on April 30,1945 (2).
